چکیده

Workflow management systems (WFMS) support the modeling, coordinated execution and monitoring of business processes within an organization. In particular, very large workflow management systems are used in organizations with several thousand users, hundreds of thousands of process instances, and several thousand sites, all distributed over wide geographic areas. In these environments, failure of the WFMS or the underlying workflow database which stores the meta-information about the processes is not tolerable. This paper addresses the problem of providing high availability in workflow management systems by proposing a backup technique which ensures that execution of a process instance can be resumed at any point in time in the event of a failure. An essential characteristic of our backup scheme is that it allows the user to define different availability levels, reducing the cost of maintaining backups. The backup scheme is implemented using the worktlow semantics, which we believe will (i) make it independent of the underlying workflow database, thus permitting the use of heterogeneous databases as primary and backup, (ii) reduce overheads, especially when compared to backup schemes provided by database systems.

Data Management in Large-scale P2P Systems1

Peer-to-peer (P2P) computing offers new opportunities for building highly distributed data systems. Unlike client-server computing, P2P can operate without central coordination and offer important advantages such as a very dynamic environment where peers can join and leave the network at any time; direct and fast communication between peers, and scale up to large number of peers. However, most ...

Flow Visualization by Conditional Sampling of a Single X-Wire Probe in a Very Long Run Experiment

Flow visualization techniques using tracer markers such as die, smoke, hydrogen bubbles, etc., have been widely used in experimental investigations of large scale structures of a variety of flow fields. They have played an important role in understanding the physics of the coherent structures formation and evolution in the transitional as well as the turbulent regions of the flow fields. Howeve...

Time-periodic Electroosmotic Flow of Non-newtonian Fluids in Microchannels

The alternating current electroosmotic flow of a non-Newtonian power-law fluid is studied in a circular microchannel. A numerical method is employed to solve the non-linear Poisson-Boltzmann and the momentum equations. The main parameters which affect the flow field are the flow behavior index, the dimensionless zeta potential and the dimensionless frequency. At very low dimensionless frequenci...
